Is a budget album really the place for nearly all the hollies hits at the start of their 50th Anniversay? |

Yes,I realised a few tracks were mono (I suppose that's one of the good things about it) particularly 'heavy'. Mind you if 'I can't let go' is the stereo version, it appears that somewhere along the line they've managed to fix the 'disappearing right channel' in the instrumental. It was probably done away back in 2003 and I just haven't noticed. |

No - at approx 1 minute 25 seconds into 'I Can't Let Go' the inferior UK stereo version actually 'goes to mono' for about three or four seconds - everything shoots to the middle during Tony's guitar part...then stereo with very basic channel seperation returns |

Yes, I've just had a more careful listen and sure enough all the sound is in the middle at that point but it doesn't seem as blatent as on earlier issues where the sound seems to go very much to the left. I must check out the 30th Anniversary one. I thought the 'Hollies At Abbey Road 63-66 contained all mono tracks but I'm not so sure about 66-70. |

Listen to track 4 on 'At Abbey Road :1963 to 1966' - 'Whole World Over' is actually in a very basic stereo with vocals and harmonica put more towards the right stereo channel, everything else is to the left channel, with some basic rhythm guitar strums put in the middle
Track 5 'Poison Ivy' (complete with two false starts) is in clear true stereo (Nash on left channel, Clarke on the right) |

Thanks Gee. I'm not so upset at this being a budget album now. Another track I'd like to know more about is Gasoline Alley Bred. When this appeard on Hollies Greatest 2, it was a mono recording electronicaly reprocessed to give stereo effect. Something I've never understood. Do you know what's been done with this track over the years? |
