I know I've read about this, but it may have been only on the liner notes of an album.

So I ask -- can someone here direct me to a link that discussed Eric's bass? Or if instead the info is indeed on an album's liner notes, I'll did out the CD and read it for myself.

What brand was this bass guitar? Did Eric have it and use it from the start of the band's career, so it would have been used even on the earliest Hollies tracks? Are there any good photos of Eric using it that can be linked?

Thanks in advance.

It's called the Fender Bass VI. I can't recall it being discussed at length in any liner notes, but if you google it in combination with his name you might get some tidbits here and there, like this for example (scroll to the end of the page for the Eric stuff).

I'm going through my pics but oddly enough I'm having a hard time finding good stills with him playing it. In most of them he's either using another model (like an Epiphone, the Gibson Firebird or the regular old Fender Precision), or if he does have the VI part of it is obscured by the other guys in front. I'll post some decent ones if I find them, but you can also see him using it in some of the earlier video clips, like "Now's the Time," the TOTP "Just One Look" and the '64 NME clips.

You're very welcome. As you can probably tell, they date pretty early, like '63/'64. None of the '65/'66 performance pics I have show him using it, so perhaps he switched loyalties later on.

He said he really liked the sound of that bass, but it was hard to keep tuned.

Right. Some of those pics show Don Rathbone. That, plus the haircuts, tells us how early it was. So, Haydock was using the Fender 6 right from the beginning.

I believe Don Rathbone is afflicted with MS but still living a comfortable life.

that's really too bad about don, i am sorry to hear that.

btw, scott, in the early days eric also played a prototype 12-string bass built by a guy named jim burns. you can hear it on 'it's in her kiss' on you tube:

I've always liked that song -- Betty Everett, right?

12-string bass? Awesome! I found this website.

Very good point Sass. Some photographic evidence, though they appear to all come from the same TV appearnce.
