There are several songs that have really affected me over the years. By coincidence, these songs have a similar "feel" to me. Lately, it occurred to me to compile these songs into a CD that I can play when I feel like sitting in an comfortable chair and relaxing with the music washing over me. Of course, I'll need to expand this beyond these few songs if I want to have a CD of adequate length.

The songs that prompted this are as follows:

Pretty Ballerina - Left Banke
Eleanor Rigby - Beatles
A Rose For Emily - Zombies

Those three songs for sure have a similar effect on me - melancholy songs of a similar tempo and "feel" that sometimes I want to hear all in a row.

So, what would fill out an album if I wanted to keep the same sort of feel and also limit myself to songs that are more or less from the same era?

I have some possibilities that come to mind:

King Midas In Reverse - The Hollies
Lady Jane - The Rolling Stones
Something by Donovan? I need help here. Maybe Jennifer Juniper, even though that's a bit too upbeat?

So, can people here give some suggestions for song titles/artisits that might flesh this idea out into a good compilation CD? I'm thinking I need 14 songs at a minimum.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Scott

Great idea SpartyScott,

Here are some songs that you might add to your potential album with a " haunting theme "

Donovan - Atlantis - A beautiful mysterious ditty !
Hollies - Wings - For me very memorable with a haunting interlude !
Beatles - Sexy Sadie - Haunts Me !
Scott Walker - Jackie - Totally wonderful !
Nico - These Days - Nico's vocals were a haunting aspect for me in her songs. An aquired vocal range which still should make it into this catagory !
Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive - Space Rock !
Stones - Play with Fire - Totally beautiful - Shivers down the back of my neck !
Kinks - See My Friends - Oh this is so outstanding as a piece of art - Please add it !
Small Faces - Tin Soldier - Shivers again !!!
Francoise Hardy - All over The World - Just Exquisite !
Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Dusty's unique vocals had a haunting quality all of there own - Just amazing !
Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer - The atmospheric sounds of wonderment when genius at work !
Barry Ryan - Eloise - WOW !!!
Cream - Badge - Now we are talking haunting !

Loads more ideas - Really enjoyed that Very Happy

Play With Fire is a fantastic suggestion.

That's the idea -- not upbeat, not happy, but is instead somber. I love that idea.

I'm unfamiliar with a few of these tracks. But fortunately I'll be able to at least hear clips of them, and then I decide if I want to buy the song from itunes.

I have that Dusty song. I love that voice, I love her delivery. I wasn't thinking about women lead vocals, but I'll definitely consider that one.

I KNEW someone would come up with a good Donovan suggestion. I wasn't thinking of a song with all those spoken-words, though. I was, though, considering Epistle To Dippy.

I wonder if something from "Of Cabbages and Kings" by Chad & Jeremy would be good.

Simon & Garfunkel's The Boxer is an inspired suggestion.

I agree Atlantis by Donovan is a little bit to wordy - Being a tad self indulgent there because I just adore the song. Epistle to Dippy is far more appropriate.

A few more suggestions :

So Long Marianne - Leonard Cohen
From The Underworld - The Herd
Marianne Faithful - This Little Bird

All the best with your project SpartyScott Very Happy

Hi Spartyscott. I know what you mean. I have a lot of similar songs filed in my head, ones that are not so well known, that I keep thinking about putting together. Some good choices from you and Carrie Anne. The first ones I thought of - Hollies of course - So Lonely, Clown and Fifi the Flea - all haunting and fabulous!

Other musts for me are:

When - Dave Clark Five (a very hard to get song, featured in their film Catch Us If You Can (wasn't even on their soundtrack album!) or called Wild Weekend in the US. A gorgeous song.

My World Fell Down - Sagittarius - recently discovered this on a flower power comp CD, fab!

Warmth of the Sun and In My Room - The Beach Boys - Two songs to melt to!

White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane (next to Heavy and I Can't Let Go, one of my favourite intros)

(He's) Raining in my Sunshine - Jay & the Americans - great!

I thought of Diary by Bread (sob!) next but realised this is from the 70s and then all I could think of were 70s stuff, so I hope the above gives you some more to think about. Have fun!

Hi Sparty

Here are 3 more for your consideration.

1, Apple of my Eye - Badfinder or any other Badfinger track

2, Wild Horses - Rolling Stones

3, I'm Gonna Cry Myself Blind - Primal Scream

and one from the Hollies - Hard, Hard Year

I hope you would consider at least one of these.

Cheers,

Martin

When I mentioned a couple of my favourite intros, I meant to say Air (That I Breathe), not (He ain't) Heavy (although that's good too!)
