Apart from numerous greatest hits collections, the only 'proper' albums I have by The Hollies are Butterfly (because I really enjoyed that in concert sung by Alan Coates), Staying Power and Then, Now & Always. So I've asked my husband if he would order the first 5 Hollies albums plus 531 7704 for my birthday this month (well, he did ask!). I'd never heard of 531 7704 until the recent BBC radio 2-part documentary. Having looked it up in the music archive on this website and finding one of the tracks is called 'Maybe it's Dawn' (vain, I know) convinced me I wanted that album as well.
Looking at the bottom of the album list, I noticed the catalogue number for Then, Now & Always is - 5317704! Anyone know why this number is popular? |

Hi Dawn.
Put the numbers in a calculator and then turn it upside down. You should see 'HOLLIES'! |

Thanks John! So it does! Very clever, obviously too technical for me Perhaps when I get the album everything will become clear... |

As John says, it will become very clear once you see the album cover.
Fabulous album.

| One of their best albums. Definitely my favourite post-1976 Hollies album! |

| Got the album and finally had a chance to listen to it. A real 'chill out' album. My favourite is 'It's in Everyone of us' - one of Allan Clarke's best vocal performances, I think. I also liked Harlequin and Satellite 3. Harmonies were good throughout the album, of course. |

Dawn, if you really want to explore the Hollies catalog, I think that the best way to do it is to get each album in sequential order and give it repeated listenings before trying the next one. That way, you can see for yourself how the band progressed through the years.
I see that you have now got the first five albums along with Butterfly.
Unless I miss my count, that means you still do not have Evolution, which really ties together the For Certain Because and Butterfly albums, as you can really hear the band's own "evolution" as they took their first steps down the path to progressive music and left the old R&B-based style behind.
So I heartily recommend Evolution to you. Once you have that, you'll have the complete Graham Nash output excepting of course the 1983 reunion album and will be all ready to dive into the Dylan album and new boy Terry Sylvester. |

| Yes, thanks for the info Spartyscott - I think I'll take up your suggestion of playing each album in sequential order a few times. I've listened to each one once in fits and starts and to be honest I can't distinguish one from the other at the moment, especially the first 4. For Certain Because stands out for me at the moment. Evolution is definitely the next one to get. |
