Okay, loads to choose from but some of the lyrics to Too Young To Be Married spring to mind straight away.
She wakes up early every morning
She gets up long before the sunshine
Greets the milkman who's still yawning
And reads the paper for a short time
Calls the kids get out of bed
They never hear a word she says
And so heralds one of the most poignant songs ever,a kitchen sink drama told in verse and executed brilliantly by The Hollies.Tony Hicks excelled himself as a songwriter on this work of art and there were plenty more. |

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother or Curly Billy for serious and fun lyrics, respectively. |

My favourite is "Confessions Of A Mind" because I think that it is Tony's masterpiece. It certainly is their most complex song and Tony managed it perfectly to match the mood of the different parts of the music with the mood of the lyrics.
We have the tender and romantic part of "She deserves to be loved". Then follows a change into rock'n'roll which fits perfectly to the confession that he was a bad boy. What could be better than a rock'n'roll to go along with these lyrics ?
Then there comes the regretting part of "She gives me everything" where Allan sounds really regretful.
After the repetition of the romantic "She deserves to be loved" when you think there won't come nothing new anymore the song ends in another highlight where Terry and Tony repeat "She deserves to be loved" in a gospel mood and Allan improvises over it and I absolutely LOVE the way Allan almost shouts "Noone else can take her place". It's one of those moments when Allan puts all of his soul and emotion into it. You HAVE TO believe that noone else can take her place the way Allan sings it.
Of course, Tony's acoustic guitar work is brilliant and the orchestration fits very well. "Confessions Of A Mind" is one of Tony's best masterpieces (both musically and lyrically) and it would be a great surprise and a real gain for their live repertoire.
Woops! I have forgotten the beginning. It starts fast and gives an introduction to the two main characters of the song and why he is a bad boy. Then the voices become more overbearing when the man starts thinking about what he does and The Hollies almost sound didactic what the lyrics really are at that particular point when they sing "Don't let her go chase as hard as you can or you'll be the loser". Great !!! Then there comes the tender part I have written about above.
Thanks for this brilliant masterpiece, Tony. |

As Carrie Anne said, there are loads to choose from, but these lyrics from 'Step Inside' from the Butterfly album spring to mind:
You don’t need an invitation
If you feel the inclination
You just call on speculation.
Step inside.
I'm sure if that song had been released as a single back then, it would have made the Top 3. |

I agree with Benny that "Confessions Of A Mind" is a masterpiece, both lyrics and music, and that was the first song that came to my mind, though there are so many to choose from.

I agree Confessions of a mind is a masterpiece and one of the best songs Tony has wrote. I would also add Don't let me Down as some of my favourite lyrics. The middle 8 makes my spine tingle
Let's build something to climb on
Making the show a live one
No need for make-up let's be real
Give all in what your giving
Making life worth living
Being alive's how you should feel
Oh and don't let, don't let me down
My feelings are near the ground
It's such a moving and heartbreaking song that you can't help shedding a tear or two |

I agree, Kat. I love "Don't Let Me Down." Allan sings it with such emotion that you can visualize every action and every image about which he sings.

It all felt so right on the first time that I saw you
I opened my eyes and I knew I needed more of you
You walked out that room there was no way to deny you
I felt myself shake the last time that I saw you
Why must it take such hurt and pain
Who are the ones who guilt and shame
Will they stand tall and take the blame |

You're absolutely right Knut, Hillsborough is such a lovely song too! Tony has written some great songs, hasn't he?
And I thought of another song, that the Hollies themselves didn't write:
Musical pictures colouring in the sound
Touching the feelings writing my thoughts down
Something that I can share with you
I can get carried away carried away carried away by the melody
'Cause I can't say what I really mean with words
I'm tryin so hard to reach you
I hope that I'm getting through
Musical pictures scenes from a song
You're instrumental
You're where it comes from
It's easy to play along
I think that's a beautiful and poetic way to express love. |

I totally echo Kat And Vrinda's posts on the very beautful Don't Let Me Down. The lyrics to this song are magnificent and i think it is definately one of Allan Clarkes best compositions. |

And don't forget the harmonies on "Gasoline...". Out of this world!
As for lyrics, I'd say the David Ackles-penned "Down River", so movingly sung solo by Mikael Rickfors, illustrates the pain of a lost love quite eloquently. |

The wind rests
The creek is like a mirror
And the sailor takes down the sails
Over the meadow
The mist is dancing
You can't believe it
But this is all yours
The lyrics to Touch written by Mikael Rickfors are pure poetry, what a talented man! |

" WOULD YOU BELIEVE"
Don't laugh in my face.
You're making me feel small.
I'm all rags wrapped in lace.
Compared with you I'm nothing.
Powerful stuff. It gets me everytime . |
